This process can involve a complete strip-down and rebuild if necessary, using modern and traditional materials, or recovering the original fabric with new fabric.
Reupholstery is the process of removing old materials from furniture, such as fabric, padding, and springs and replacing them with new ones to restore or transform its appearance and comfort.
How to tell if a piece is worth re-upholstering
A piece is often worth re‑upholstering if it has a sound frame, offers lasting comfort, or the kind of craftsmanship that’s hard to find in modern furniture. Well‑built hardwood frames, quality springs, and a style that fits perfectly in your space are all good signs. Sentimental pieces also make excellent candidates; restoring them often offers far more personal value than replacing them.
It is more environmentally friendly than buying new and is far less effort as we come to you! Your furniture will not go to waste and end up in landfill. We offer a collection and delivery service, so you will not have to lift a finger. Our network of leading fabric suppliers allows us to offer an extensive range of high-quality and durable fabrics, all tailor-made to your requirements.
Reupholstery and sustainability
Over 22 million pieces of furniture are thrown away annually in the UK, equating to around 670,000 tonnes of furniture waste. Research shows that only 17% of discarded furniture is recycled in the UK.
Reupholstery is a key aspect of sustainability and has been one of the company’s main values from day one. Asnew’s founders, Gary and Jeremy, hated to see perfectly good quality furniture end up in landfill, and since they had the skills and vision, they decided to make it their mission to do something about it.
We will carefully strip down your furniture and remove all original fabric.
The frame will be inspected and the necessary repairs will be carried out; joints will be tightened, dowelled, glued or screwed depending on what is required.
Once we are happy with the frame, work will begin on the springs and webbing. Any springs and webbing that need replacing will be replaced.
We will then begin to build the layers back up. Padding and stuffing is checked and replaced where required.
Finally, with the frame and padding restored, your chosen fabric is measured, cut and sewn to shape.
The fabric outer shell is sewn together and fixed to the frame using either traditional or modern methods of upholstery depending on your preference.
Finally your chosen cushion interiors or original cushions are fitted into the cushion covers.
