Materials like coconut coir, wool, and natural latex offer exceptional comfort and durability, naturally. When paired with thoughtful, high-quality craftsmanship, they help us create pieces that are not only built to last generations, but also healthier for people and better for the planet.
Coconut coir is made from the fibrous husks of coconuts - a natural by-product that’s renewable and often discarded. Using this material helps reduce waste and supports more sustainable production. Naturally coarse and strong, the husks offer excellent structure and resistance to wear, making coir an ideal alternative to synthetic materials in upholstery. The process of transforming these husks into coir padding is low-waste and uses minimal chemicals, resulting in a durable, biodegradable material that’s both practical and planet-friendly. Its firm texture provides support, while its breathability and natural resistance to moisture enhance comfort and longevity. Coir is also hypoallergenic, making it a smart choice for those with allergies, and its durability helps furniture maintain its shape for years to come.
Natural latex is derived from the sap of the Hevea Brasiliensis (rubber tree), a renewable resource tapped without harming the tree. The bark heals quickly after collection, and each tree can produce latex for up to 30 years before being replanted.
The sap is processed into foam with an open-cell structure by infusing air during production. This design promotes airflow, helps heat dissipate, and allows moisture to evaporate quickly. Unlike many synthetic foams, natural latex does not absorb moisture and is naturally resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew, making it an excellent hypoallergenic choice.
Exceptionally durable, natural latex foam retains its shape and performance for many years, reducing the need for replacement. Its responsive, springy feel offers both pressure relief and proper support, making it as comfortable as it is long-lasting.
Wool is a durable, resilient, and sustainable material. Shorn annually for animal health, it supports local agriculture and provides a 100% natural fibre with many beneficial properties. Its natural crimp and elasticity allow it to withstand wear, resist crushing, and retain its appearance for many years, reducing the need for replacement and waste. Wool’s microscopic spring-like structure helps it bounce back after compression, maintaining comfort over time. Naturally fire-retardant due to its high moisture and nitrogen content, it ignites slowly, self-extinguishes, and forms a protective char rather than fueling flames—making it a safe choice for homes and commercial spaces. As a renewable and biodegradable fibre, its inherent qualities make it an ideal material for our natural upholstery.
By choosing materials like natural latex foam, coconut coir, and wool, we create upholstery that is not only exceptionally comfortable but also built to last and kinder to the planet. Each natural component brings its own unique benefits which offer the perfect alternative to synthetic materials. Investing in natural upholstery means investing in quality, health, and a more responsible future for our homes and the environment.
